- Promoted the creation of Arlington’s local bus service (“ART”), now carrying close to 2 million passengers annually on 11 routes. This is an increase from 100,000 riders in ten years.
- Fostered a more walkable Arlington and worked successfully to move Arlington to a pedestrian-friendly urban environment. This included a substantial investment in new and better sidewalks, more intersection traffic signals, including pioneering of the now-familiar count-down signals, and dedicated pedestrian crossings at key locations.
- Supported neighborhood traffic calming measures, and expanded on-street parking capacity and shared parking opportunities in public and private garages.
- Been instrumental in creating on-street bike lanes.
- Initiated Safe Routes to School, a major effort conducted in concert with Arlington Public Schools, employing engineering changes, enforcement, and education to improve safe walking to school for children and their parents.
- Created a Teen Transit inititative, working with the County Division of Transportation, Arlington Public Schools, and directly with students to promote transit use by teens -- including providing on-site information in schools (designed in consultation with a Teen Transit Council) and discounted fares for student riders.
- Increased the safety of our sidewalks by proposing the sidewalk snow removal ordinance for commercial areas to remove snow within 24 hours.
