The Sky Really is Falling at Metro
Given the recent drumbeat of news reports containing the words "Metro" and "crisis," people could be forgiven if they don't jump every time the alarm sounds. This, however, is the time to get scared. Our regional transit agency has been forced to consider a capital funding plan that would constitute a wholesale withdrawal of the region's commitment to the Metro system -- at exactly the moment it most needs an infusion of new money.

County Board’s Zimmerman Unopposed Within Democratic Ranks
Arlington Sun Gazette Newspaper article by Scott McCaffrey, Staff Writer (Created: Saturday, April 10, 2010 8:13 AM EDT). Arlington Democrats now have their political ticket set for the fall, as neither County Board Vice Chairman Chris Zimmerman nor School Board Chairman Sally Baird picked up opposition within the party ranks. Both Zimmerman and Baird now have to wait and see if any opposition from outside the party bubbles up, or whether they will cruise, unopposed, to re-election victories. For County Board: Chris Zimmerman was the only candidate to file for the Arlington County Democratic Committee’s endorsement by the April 9 filing deadline. As a result, he will be confirmed as the party’s nominee at a future committee meeting. In a statement, Zimmerman said he planned to continue to work on issues ranging from planning and transportation to maintenance of the county government’s high bond rating. “I look forward to working together with all Arlingtonians to find innovative solutions that reflect our values and benefit everyone in the county,” he said. Zimmerman was first elected to the board in a special election in 1996, and currently is its senior member. In his most recent re-election bid, in 2006, Zimmerman defeated Republican Michael McMenamin and Green Party candidate Josh Ruebner.
